Resolved Question: Proof of loss/Flood insurance pay out question?
After almost 6 weeks I finally got my adjusters proof of loss estimate from the damages to my home from Hurricane IKE, while I understand the total devestation here on the island, I am worried about time frames and how things go from this point on..
1. We have 39 thous in damages on a 204 thous dollar home, should I expect the flood ins. company to dispute or try to fight this estimate? How long does it usually take IF things go smoothly from here on out? I have tennants I need to get back in their units so I can get rent again to help with mortgage payments.
2. How does this work, do I find the contractors, plumbing, drywall, flooring electricial or does my flood compnay choose who does what, and how do the funds for repairs get dispursed? Do they send me a check for it all at once, does it sit in a bank like an equity line of credit so to speak or do I submit receipts and invoices and the company cuts the contractors a check?
Never been thru a claim process (or such a devestating hurricane) before, thanks in advance....

Resolved Question: Should the government move people out of hurricane paths?
In the aftermath of Katrina and Ike, do you think the government should take people's land who live on barrier islands and other places that are exceptionally hard-hit by hurricanes, or places especially vulnerable to earthquakes (such as the Marina District in San Francisco), floods (Mississippi Valley towns that are repeatedly flooded), etc.
Should these people get paid repeatedly to replace their homes?
Instead of rebuilding, they can be given equivalent land in a place that is less likely to be destroyed when it happens again (it always does in those places). We can give them extra help to rebuild in that location, and we can save the US economy trillions of $$$ in the long-run. They can even keep communities together.
It's been done in Valmeyer, Illinois. http://www.conradol.com/valmeyer.html
The land taken can be turned into national beaches/parks/wetlands/farms that won't cost the country billions every time it's hit by another hurricane/earthquake/flood. We can still visit these places but we would no longer have to subsidize these people's dangerous choice of location through our taxes and increased insurance costs.
Or should we just stop giving them federal aid and/or insurance to rebuild?

Resolved Question: Anyone dropped from State Farm Insurance (home) after filing claim?
We live in NY (Long Island) and recently came home from vacation to find a bad flood, caused by a washing machine hose which broke from wear and tear. There is damage, both upstairs and down. The washing machine is upstairs in the kitchen, and there was water in a few rooms which damaged carpeting and walls - not too horrible. The worst was downstairs where the water caused the ceilings to collapse in two rooms. Needless to say, this will wind up being a large claim. How nervous should we be about being dropped? State Farm is sending a second person to look at the damage, after receiving the estimates from the restoration company and flooring contractor, in order to approve the work. We have only had one other small claim, for a lost wedding band, 10 years ago. We have three other policies, in addition to our home insurance. Thank you for any advice you can give.

I have lived here for over 30 years . i live across from a canal that has never flooded in all the hurricane years here on Long Island. Now out of the blue they just Doubled it. without warning. they said they forsee a major hurricane. They have been getting rich off of all the non use of my insurance by me .This seems so unfair and how can I fight it, we all want to not move out of new york but one by one our neighbors cant afford all the nonsence anymore. I understand when one has car insurance and you have an accident and use your insurance it goes up . but we never have... PLEASE what can we do.
